INGREDIENT JOURNAL

How to read a cosmetic label

A label contains more than ingredients. Directions, shelf life, and warnings also help you use a product well.

The ingredient list

Make sure it is complete and belongs to the exact product you are using. Products with similar names can have different formulas.

Period after opening

The open-jar symbol may show “6M” or “12M,” indicating the recommended period of use after opening. Check any expiration date separately.

Warnings and application area

Directions to rinse, avoid the eye area, or use sun protection matter as much as the formula. Follow the stated area and frequency of use.

Batch code

The batch code helps trace production. Keep it if you need to contact the brand or an authority about a problem.
