The open-jar symbol

On applicable European cosmetic labels, an open-jar symbol indicates the period after opening. A marking such as 12M communicates twelve months after opening. It is different from the date you bought the product. Consult the packaging for the manufacturer's specific information.

Keep the batch reference

A batch number or reference helps identify a particular production batch. Photograph it separately if you want a record for a future manufacturer question. It is not an ingredient and should not be pasted into the INCI field.

Read beyond the symbols

Directions, precautions and product identity matter alongside the ingredient panel. Put the packaging next to your ingredient review so you do not lose that context. If an icon is unfamiliar, check the brand's explanation rather than assuming it certifies a particular standard. A scanner review does not replace the rest of the label.

Your practical checklist

  • Record when you first open the product.
  • Keep directions and batch details separate from ingredient text.
  • Read the manufacturer's explanation of unfamiliar icons.
